It’s hard to believe that it’s already been six months since I moved to Borneo, Sabah. Time has flown by, yet so much has changed in my life. The decision to relocate here was a mix of excitement and uncertainty, but now that I’ve settled in, I can say it has been one of the most meaningful transitions I’ve experienced.
In this post, I’ll share my reflections on the past six months—what I’ve learned, the challenges I’ve faced, and the things I’ve come to love about life in Sabah.
1. Adjusting to the Slow and Simple Life
Living in Sabah feels like a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively. Compared to the busier, fast-paced life in urban cities, Sabah specifically KK offers a slower, more relaxed pace. People here take their time to enjoy life, and I’ve had to unlearn the habit of rushing through my days.
There’s something therapeutic about the simplicity—whether it’s watching the sun rise over Mount Kinabalu or enjoying a bowl of steaming ngiu chap (beef noodles) at a local stall. This lifestyle has taught me to savor small moments, something I never realized I was missing before.
2. The Warmth of the People
One thing that stood out immediately is how friendly and welcoming the locals are. I’ve had complete strangers offer help, engage in conversations, and share their stories with me. Whether it’s my neighbors or the stall owners at the market, I’ve come to appreciate the sense of community that defines life in Sabah.
It has also been refreshing to experience to really lived with people just like me. It's feel good to help or support our local people.
3. Discovering Nature’s Beauty
Sabah’s natural beauty is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. From crystal-clear beaches to lush jungles and mountain trails, every weekend feels like an opportunity for adventure. I’ve taken trips to places like Kundasang, Tenom, and Taman Ujana Rimba, and every time I’m reminded how lucky I am to live here.
Spending more time outdoors has also helped me reconnect with myself. Whether it's hiking, grounding, or just breathing in the fresh air, Sabah’s nature has a way of making you feel at peace.
4. Challenges Along the Way
Of course, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. One of the biggest challenges has been adjusting to the lack of certain conveniences that I took for granted in bigger cities. Things like online shopping deliveries can take longer, and not all products are readily available here.
Another challenge has been the distance from family and friends. While technology makes it easier to stay connected, there are days when I miss the familiar faces and places I left behind. But this experience has taught me to embrace solitude and find new ways to be content with my own company.
5. A New Perspective on Work and Life
Living in Sabah has also shifted my perspective on work-life balance. Here, people seem to understand the importance of making time for family, rest, and leisure—something I struggled to balance before. I’ve started to adopt this mindset, learning to slow down and prioritize what truly matters.
It’s not just about work anymore; it’s about finding joy in everyday life and cultivating inner peace. The move has made me realize that success is not just about career achievements but also about personal growth and happiness.
6. Looking Forward to the Future
After six months in Sabah, I feel grateful for the new chapter I’ve begun here. The experiences I’ve had, the lessons I’ve learned, and the relationships I’ve built have enriched my life in ways I didn’t expect.
While there’s still more to explore and learn, I’m excited to see what the future holds. I plan to continue immersing myself in the local culture, trying new foods and spending more time discovering hidden gems in Borneo.
Final Thoughts
Life after six months in Borneo has been both an adventure and a learning experience. It’s a journey of self-discovery, adaptation, and growth. Although there have been challenges, the beauty, simplicity, and warmth of Sabah have made the transition more than worthwhile.
If you’re considering making a similar move or just looking to slow down, I encourage you to embrace the unknown. Sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone is exactly what you need to rediscover yourself and find a new sense of purpose.
