Today is the fifth Tuesday since my dad gone back to heaven.
Every Tuesday, whenever I think about my late dad, I find myself reflect on my life, there’s one thing I am deeply grateful for my dad’s decision to introduce Christian values into our family. I am second generation of Christian faith in my family. This faith that shaped me in ways I can never fully put into words. My dad has been so committed in his faith, from what I know, he was a deacon at church for many years and he didn’t just teach us to go to church; he lived out his faith through kindness, patience, humility, and love for others. That was the real sermon.
Growing up, I didn’t always realize the impact it had on me. But as I became a parent myself, I started to see just how powerful that foundation was. In moments of fear, I prayed. In times of joy, I gave thanks. And in seasons of uncertainty, I held on to hope because that’s what my dad showed me.
Now that I have a son of my own, I want to carry on that legacy. Not just by telling him about God, but by showing him what it means to live a life of faith. I want him to know that Jesus is more than a story we can talk to Him, trust Him, and lean on Him every single day.
How I’m Introducing the Christian Faith to My 5-Year-Old
Introducing faith to a 5-year-old doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, I believe it’s in the small, consistent things that children truly begin to understand who God is.
Here are some simple ways I’m planting seeds of faith in my son’s heart:
Basic prayers
Every night before bed, before we eat every meal, we pray together. I teach my son a simplest prayer and I even teach him to pray first whenever anything bad or good happen in this life.
The basic prayers don't have to be complicated, it's just simple.
If you're Christian parent and not sure what the prayers to teach and your child will remember it easily, here are our prayers:
Bedtime prayers
Thank you Lord
Thank you Jesus
I want to sleep, Good night Jesus. Amen
Before eat prayers
Thank You Lord
Thank You Jesus
Bless my food. Amen
Basic prayer if anything:
Thank you Lord
Thank you Jesus
Please help me. Amen
I am grateful my son remember these prayers now and never forget to pray before anything. I really want my son to have a solid foundation in believe and trust God, just like what my dad has done to me.
Bible story time
As I write this blog post, honestly we don't do Bible story time for our son yet.
Whenever we went to room to sleep, my son will request to turn off the light and watch his ipad for 30 minutes ( we set the timer). I really want to introduce Bible story time to my son. If you have a tips doing this, please let me know in comment ya.
Christian songs and worship music
I love to listen to Christian songs.
Everyday and every ride, we will listen to Christian songs. After listened with me many times in his life, he love it too.
I already introduce some Sunday school song to him but still, he seems trying to digest it. Music has a way of sticking in the mind and heart, and I love hearing him hum worship songs when he plays it tells me something is sinking in.
Going to church as a family
One of our challenge as a parent is bring our son to church.
Waking him up in the early morning will sometimes make him bad mood and eventually it make us parent feel so annoyed. But, most of the time, we just go for it even though our son is crying. We will try our best to calm him down before go to the car. If it's not working, we just angkut and memekakkan telinga listen to his crying haha. Even if he’s sleepy during the service, I believe that showing up matters. He sees that faith is a part of our weekly rhythm, and that community and worship are important to us.
Talking about God in everyday life
When he’s scared, I remind him that Jesus is with him. When he does something kind, I tell him that he’s showing love like Jesus. I want him to see that God is not just in church or books—He’s with us every day.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about being intentional.
So thank you, Dad, for passing down something that truly matters. Your quiet faith spoke volumes, and now I hope to pass that same light to the next generation. One bedtime prayer, one story, one song at a time.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
— Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
May we continue to walk in faith and pass on the light of Christ to the little hearts entrusted to us. 💛
