Life Story: Closed my #workinginborneo chapter

For many, choosing a place to work is driven by career growth, financial stability, or personal preference. For me, I choose to work in Borneo(Sabah or Sarawak) because this has always been my dream. I have always wanted to be close to my family while experiencing life and career opportunities here. That's why when the opportunity come last year, I grabbed it even though its too risky(contract based). But, I'm confident to take it because its rare for software testing position available in Borneo(Sabah & Sarawak) and my manager assured me that the contract will be keep extend every year, I trusted it!  Which is naive of me...

After 1 year, my contract won't be extend. I got the information back in end of October 2024 and I've been looking for new opportunity since then. But, several months has gone but I don't have any offer yet. I totally expected this because software testing opportunities is very rare in KK. I applied on other field that I can use my skills but no feedback or some of it called me but the salary is too low(not even able to pay for my own house at Kajang).

Then, I realized this #workinginborneo dream does not match with my reality. My reality is totally different. In order to match my reality, I need to go back to KL/Selangor. I don't really mind because we had my house there and to be really honest, even after spending almost a year in KK, my heart is still and  always at Selangor and same goes to my son and my husband. We just don't know why...

I don't need to explain details about this but I owe an explanation to myself and I want to make peace with this chapter in my life and after today, I will move on from this chapter....

Connection to Nature vs. Career Growth

Borneo(Sabah) is home to some of the world’s most stunning natural landscapes. The lush rainforests, beautiful beaches, and serene environment provide a peaceful atmosphere that is hard to find in fast-paced urban settings. However, while I appreciate the slower pace of life, I have also realized that my career aspirations require more opportunities, which are more readily available in KL/Selangor.

Limited Career Opportunities

Borneo(Sabah) offers diverse career opportunities, particularly in industries related to conservation, tourism, agriculture, and local businesses. However, after experiencing the job market here, I have realized that my career goals align better with the corporate, networking, and professional growth opportunities that KL/Selangor offers.

Cost of Living vs. Lifestyle

While the cost of living in Borneo(Sabah) is lower compared to KL, I have realized that financial savings alone do not outweigh the need for a more fulfilling and challenging work environment. The opportunities for career advancement and exposure to a larger professional network in KL/Selangor are more appealing to me in the long run.

Work-Life Balance vs. Ambition

One of my priorities in life is achieving a good work-life balance. While Borneo(Sabah) offers a serene environment for personal well-being, I have found that my ambitions push me towards a more competitive and fast-moving work setting. The challenge and excitement of career growth in KL/Selangor motivate me, making me reconsider where I truly want to build my future.

A Dream vs. Reality

Even though working in Borneo(Sabah) has always been my dream, reality sometimes paints a different picture. Career limitations, financial considerations, and personal ambitions make me realize that I need to return to KL/Selangor. While I will always cherish my time in Borneo(Sabah), I know that my professional and personal growth will be best fulfilled in the city.

Final Thoughts

Working in Borneo(Sabah or Sarawak) was a dream that I got to experience, but it also made me realize that my long-term future lies in KL/Selangor. The opportunity to contribute to the community, enjoy a serene environment, and experience cultural diversity has been fulfilling. However, I now look forward to the next chapter—returning to KL, where I can pursue my ambitions while carrying the valuable lessons I learned from my time in Borneo(Sabah).
