The school holidays are almost over, right?
So, I thought I’d share something about going back to school. I try to relate to the current situation—I hope you don’t mind.
Primary School Memories
Back in primary school, I studied at a school in my kampung. The school is still there today, and I’m happy to see how much it has improved. It finally has a proper building! When I was there, the school was quite old, honestly. But I’m really thankful that it has developed over the years, and now, kids in the kampung can go to school without traveling far.
I always loved going back to school after the long Christmas holidays. I couldn’t wait to see my friends and, of course, learn new things. But the best part? The food! I got to eat different kinds of food compared to what we usually had at home.
Overall, my primary school experience was a happy one. The only downside? I didn’t always get a new uniform every year—haha! My parents had many kids, so buying new uniforms every year wasn’t always possible. But I didn’t really mind.
Secondary School at SMK Belaga
After primary school, I went to SMK Belaga for three years. It was my first time being far from home, and it was tough. Thankfully, my fourth sister was there, so I didn’t feel too homesick.
Going back to school after the holidays was always exciting, especially because my mum prepared bekal (packed food) for us. She would make:
🍽 Lia akaw
🍽 Tung ubi
🍽 Mak
…and more!
I always looked forward to school because of this.
But honestly, during my time at SMK Belaga, I was determined to go further. I studied hard because I wanted to move to a better school after PMR.
A Tough Decision: Moving to Bintulu
And yes! My dream came true. I did well in my PMR, and I got the opportunity to transfer to a school in Bintulu. But it was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made.
At that time, my younger brother had just started Form 1 at SMK Belaga. He was only 13 years old and was often bullied in the asrama. I wanted to stay and protect him, but I knew I had to move for a better future.
It broke my heart to leave him behind—he would cry, and I felt so guilty. But I had to be strong and focus on changing my life’s direction. Leaving my brother at SMK Belaga was the hardest decision I’ve ever made.
A New Chapter in Bintulu
At 16 years old, I moved to Bintulu—the first city I had ever been to in my life. And the rest is history.
I loved my new school. Moving there was one of the best decisions I ever made. I got to:
✅ Experience new things
✅ Meet amazing people (some of whom are still my friends today!)
For me, going back to school was always a different kind of experience. I had to be away from my family and live in an asrama. But looking back, every step of my school journey shaped who I am today.
Final Thoughts
Going back to school is always a mix of emotions—excitement, nervousness, and nostalgia. Whether it’s in the kampung or the city, school memories stay with us forever.
