Borneo Road Trip : Sabah(Kota Kinabalu) to Sarawak(Bintulu)



I just can't wait to sit down and write down about this experience.
Finally, I got to checked my lifetime checklist which is Borneo Road Trip.

The excitement of embarking on our first road trip from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, to Bintulu, Sarawak, on December 21, 2024, was unmatched. It was a journey filled with adventure, scenic beauty, and unforgettable memories. We travelled from Kota Kinabalu,Sabah to Bintulu,Sarawak within 1 day. I still can't believe we did it!


The Journey Begins

We started early in the morning around 7.30am, our car packed with essentials—snacks, drinks, a playlist of favorite tunes, and a map of the route ahead. The anticipation was palpable as we left Kota Kinabalu, the city slowly fading in our rearview mirror, replaced by the open road and lush greenery.





The checkpoints

We want to travel to Bintulu,sarawak via the new bridge so we will stop at 5 checkpoints.

1st checkpoint: Sindumin checkpoint(Enter Sarawak)
- Prepare passport only 


2nd checkpoint: Mengkalap checkpoint(Exit Sarawak)
- Prepare passport + slip(for non Sarawakian)


3rd checkpoint : Labu (Enter Brunei) or to enter Jambatan Temburong
- Prepare passport 
- Prepare QR code of ESS

4th checkpoint: Sg Tujoh ( Exit Brunei)
- Prepare passport 
- Prepare QR code of ESS


5th checkpoint: Miri checkpoint(Enter Sarawak)
- Prepare passport 

Challenges on the Road

Of course, no road trip is without its challenges. From navigating winding roads to occasional delays at checkpoints, the journey tested our patience and teamwork. But each hurdle made the experience more rewarding.


Arriving in Bintulu

After hours on the road, we finally arrived in Bintulu. The feeling of accomplishment and excitement was overwhelming. Seeing the familiar faces of friends and family waiting to welcome us made all the effort worthwhile.


Lessons Learned

  1. Plan Ahead: Having a clear itinerary and ensuring the car was in top condition saved us from unnecessary stress.

  2. Be Flexible: Unexpected detours and delays are part of the adventure. Embracing them made the journey more enjoyable.

  3. Pack Wisely: From snacks to emergency kits, being prepared for any situation is crucial for a smooth road trip.




Final Thoughts

Our first road trip from Kota Kinabalu to Bintulu was more than just a drive; it was a journey of discovery, connection, and shared experiences. It reminded us of the beauty of nature, the importance of togetherness, and the joy of exploration.
