One of my goals this year is to read 12 books, meaning one book each month.
I kicked off the year with one of my all-time favorite books, Becoming Hannah by Hannah Yeoh. This book has stirred a fair bit of controversy in the political world, but having read it before, I’ve always wondered what exactly made it so contentious. Personally, I don’t find anything wrong with YB Hannah sharing her faith—after all, that’s a significant part of her life journey.
Becoming Hannah is a memoir that provides an inspiring insight into her transformation from an ordinary Malaysian citizen to the country’s first female Speaker of a State Assembly and, now, Malaysia’s Minister of Youth and Sports. The book chronicles her shift from a legal career into the political arena, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs she experienced along the way.
What struck me most about the book was Hannah Yeoh’s raw honesty in sharing her struggles, doubts, and unshakable faith. She offers a candid look into her personal and professional life, detailing the hurdles of navigating a male-dominated political landscape and the sacrifices she made. Her story stands as a powerful testament to perseverance, integrity, and the strength of believing in a higher purpose.
Alongside her political journey, Hannah also opens up about her life as a working mother. Balancing the demanding world of politics with family life is no easy feat, but she illustrates how resilience, a strong support system, and faith helped her manage motherhood while making impactful contributions to society. Her ability to lead with compassion, while maintaining a focus on both family and career, makes her a true inspiration for working mothers like myself.
I especially appreciated her emphasis on staying true to one’s principles, regardless of external pressures. Her story is a powerful reminder that leadership isn’t about seeking power—it’s about serving others with sincerity and humility.
Becoming Hannah isn’t just a political memoir—it’s a deeply inspiring read for anyone looking to make a difference in their community. Whether you’re passionate about politics or simply enjoy stories of resilience, this book offers valuable lessons on leadership, courage, and faith.
Overall, this book left a lasting impression on me, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an inspiring and thought-provoking read.
I am looking forward to exploring more books that offer such meaningful insights in the months to come.
