It's almost December! For us Borneo people, it's time again!
Usually during end of year, a lot of us will travel whether to balik kampung for Christmas or travel to somewhere that need to use airplane.
Some of us will ride airplanes and for those that having toddlers, flying with a toddler can feel daunting but with the right preparation, it can be a smooth and even enjoyable experience. We first bring our son naik flight back when he just 1 year old for celebrate Christmas at Borneo. It's really nerve wreaking so I do my own research on how to flying with toddler.
Here are some tips to help you manage your journey and create pleasant memories in the skies with your little one.
1. Plan Ahead
Book your flights strategically. Choose flights during your toddler's usual nap times to increase the chances of them sleeping during the journey. Also, if possible, opt for direct flights to avoid layovers and extra hassle.
From my experience, I purchased flight ticket with seats and during my son's nap time. For his first flight, we are succeed but the second flight is total disaster because we bought late night flight time...ugghhhh.
2. Pack Smart, Pack Light
While you’ll need the essentials, overpacking can lead to stress. Create a checklist to ensure you don’t forget:
- Diapers, wipes, and a changing mat
- Snacks (easy-to-eat, mess-free options)
- Favorite toys or books for entertainment
- A change of clothes (for both you and your toddler, in case of accidents)
- Comfort items like a blanket or stuffed animal
3. Bring Entertainment
Toddlers have short attention spans, so pack a variety of distractions. Sticker books, coloring materials, or small toys can be lifesavers. If you allow screen time, download their favorite shows or apps in advance.
4. Prepare for Takeoff and Landing
The change in air pressure during takeoff and landing can be uncomfortable for little ears. Offer a pacifier, bottle, sippy cup or lolilop (opps!) to help them swallow and equalize the pressure.
5. Dress Comfortably
Choose soft, breathable clothing for your toddler and dress them in layers to accommodate changes in cabin temperature. Slip-on shoes are great for quick removal during security checks.
No matter what, don't forget do this. You can change diapers in the toilet, but that will be very uncomfortable so to avoid that, change diapers before fly.
6. Arrive Early
Traveling with a toddler means you’ll need extra time to manage security checks, bathroom breaks, and unexpected delays. Arriving early ensures you won’t feel rushed.
7. Board Strategically
Many airlines offer early boarding for families, which can be helpful for settling in. However, if your toddler is restless, consider boarding last to minimize the time spent sitting on the plane before takeoff and avoid bought seats at the back of plane, this will make your toddler feel impatience. It's better to buy seat at good distance.
8. Keep Calm and Stay Flexible
Your toddler might get cranky or have a meltdown—it happens! Stay calm, and don’t stress about what other passengers think. A calm parent helps soothe an anxious toddler. Just ignore the staring from other passengers, just be calm ya.
9. Engage with Your Toddler
Use the time to bond! Point out interesting sights out of the window or talk about the excitement of flying. Toddlers love exploring new experiences with their parents.
10. Learn Airline Policies
Check your airline’s policies on traveling with toddlers. Some provide bassinets for long-haul flights, while others offer priority boarding or discounts on infant seats.
Final Thoughts
Flying with a toddler might require extra effort, but it’s also an opportunity to create precious family memories. With these tips, you’ll feel more prepared to handle the journey and enjoy the adventure ahead. Safe travels!
