1. The Comfort of Familiarity
Semenanjung Malaysia holds countless memories in my life especially my adult life. I got my first job, met my husband, have many close friends, gave birth to my son there and I even have my house there. Sometimes, I find myself wondering:
- Will it feel the same if I return?
- Will I fit back into the hustle and bustle that used to define my life there?
After 6 months staying in KK, I find myself enjoying my life here. I love my routine here compare to my life routine in KL.In KL, I always need to rushing. I wake up at 5am- 5.30am to catch up first train to my workplace or just to drive in highway with less traffic jammed. I need to wake up that early so I can arrive at my workplace at or before 7.30am so I can go back around 4.30pm. If I can go back around 4.30pm, I can fetch my son before 6pm. If after 6pm, I will need to pay RM10/hour. I can say, I am super tired of this routine.
During the weekend here in Sabah, I can go back to my husband's kampung or spending my whole 48 hours with my family especially my son. Back in Kajang, I don't really spend my 48 hours with my family as my husband will go for church practice and prayers in the Saturday evening until 10pm and then we spent our Sunday morning until afternoon at church. The rest Sunday afternoon until night, maybe we will go to nearby park and I will prepare for the upcoming week.
It's sound so tiring, right? I don't know if I can cope with that kind life anymore.
2. Life in Sabah: A Different Kind of Peace
Living in Sabah has brought a unique sense of peace and fulfillment. The slower pace, friendly communities, and natural beauty—like Kundasang’s cool breeze and Tenom’s scenic countryside—are hard to leave behind. I’ve come to love the lifestyle here, far from the hectic urban life I once knew.
3. Opportunities and Lifestyle Differences
It’s undeniable that Semenanjung offers more opportunities in terms of career, education, and entertainment. Big cities like Kuala Lumpur are hubs for growth and networking, which can be hard to find in East Malaysia. But with these opportunities come higher costs of living and more stress.
- Do I really want to return to a fast-paced lifestyle?
- Can I find a balance between ambition and contentment?
4. The Challenge of Transition
Moving back means starting over—again. It’s not just about adjusting to a new environment, but also re-establishing relationships, routines, and habits. After spending time in Borneo, my priorities have shifted. I wonder if the person I am now would thrive in the same way I once did in Semenanjung.
5. What the Future Holds
While the idea of going back to Semenanjung crosses my mind, for now, Sabah feels like the right place. It offers a lifestyle that aligns with where I am in life, and there’s still so much here to explore and experience.
Perhaps the answer to whether I’ll return isn’t a simple yes or no. It may depend on where life takes me, the opportunities that arise, or even the whispers of home calling me back one day.
Final Thoughts
Whether or not I return to Semenanjung Malaysia, I’ve realized that home isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling. Right now, Sabah gives me that sense of belonging.
But who knows what the future holds? Life is full of unexpected twists, and maybe one day, I’ll find myself back in Semenanjung, creating new memories while carrying the experiences I’ve gained here with me.
