Potty Training in Progress: Encouragement & Tips for Fellow Moms

Hi mama friends! 💛

I’m currently in the middle of potty training my son, who is turning 5 this year. It’s been a journey full of messes, mini victories, and lots of patience. I wanted to share this post to encourage other moms who are also in the thick of potty training whether you're just starting or feeling discouraged because progress seems slow. You’re not alone!

Every Child Is Different

First things first: don’t compare your child’s timeline to others. Some kids are fully trained at 2, some later and that’s totally okay. I used to worry because I saw other kids already independent in the toilet, but I’ve learned that our journey is uniquely ours.

What’s Working for Us

Here are a few tips and things we’re doing that I hope can help you too:

1. Start When Your Child Shows Readiness

If your child is scared of the toilet, refuses to sit, or just isn’t interested, don’t force it. Wait a little and try again later. My son started showing signs like telling us when he peed or wanted to poop that’s when we knew he was ready.

2. Use Positive Reinforcement

Celebrate every little success. We clap, cheer, and even do a happy dance when he goes on the potty!

Sometimes we give stickers or a small reward. It makes him feel proud and motivated.

3. Have Patience (Lots of It!)

Accidents will happen it’s part of the process. Instead of scolding, I remind myself that this is a learning moment. Stay calm, clean up, and encourage your child to try again next time.

4. Establish a Routine

We try to bring him to the toilet at consistent times after meals, before bed, or every 1–2 hours. Having a routine helps build the habit.

5. Let Them Be Involved

Let your child flush, choose their potty seat, or even pick their own underwear. Involving them makes them feel in control and excited about the process.

6. Praise, Not Pressure

Children can sense our stress. I’ve found it more effective to say “You’re learning!” instead of “You should know this by now.” Gentle encouragement goes a long way.

To the Mama Still Struggling…

If you feel like giving up, don’t. You’re doing a great job. Progress is not always linear. There are good days and bad days. But I promise, your child will get there. It’s not a race.

Potty training is not just about the child learning, but also about us learning how to guide them with patience and love. 💕

Hang in there, mama. You’ve got this. And when your child finally masters it, you’ll look back and be so proud of them and of yourself.

With love,
Aya
