How to Start Your Job Search: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hello~

It's time of the year again!

I think job searching in the beginning of the year has became my yearly routine start from 2021 since I left my permanent job at SONY. God really answered my prayers to get out from my comfort zone for almost 10 years.

Fast forward today, I am still contract worker that need to constantly do job searching whenever the contract almost end or whenever I wanted. I don't really like this routine because you know, job searching process is lengthy and unpredictable process but when I think positive about it, this make me asah my faith in God and trust my strength. But, I feel anxious pula because of my age...aiyaaa

Last year, on these same date, I'm also in the middle of searching for a new job as I already submitted my resignation in December 2023 and my last day will be in 20 February 2024. My target was to find a job by March 2024 so I can start work on April 2024. I did get the job on March 2024 and start on April 2024 and  I believe God will do the same for me this year but I secretly feel scared hahaha but keep in faith.

This year situation will be different because I'm not the one that willingly to tender my resignation but my manager informed that, they won't extend my contract due to budget constraint. I know this will happen and this is one of the down side of contract worker. But, never mind. Let's see the positive side of this and don't feel so down about it. I need to move forward and I need to find a job before my contract end soon.

Honestly speaking, looking for a job can feel overwhelming, especially if you don’t know where to begin. Even though I've been doing job searching for quite sometimes now but it's still overwhelming process and I never record or write down what the process I've been through so this time, I decided to write about it so it can be my reference and your reference whether you’re a fresh graduate, switching careers, or simply searching for a new opportunity, it’s important to approach your job search with a clear plan.

Let’s break it down step by step so you can start your journey with confidence.

Step 1: Define Your Goals

Before diving into job boards, take some time to reflect on what you want

If you don't know how to know what you want, you can start by ask yourself especially for the fresh graduates.

  • Where is the location of the job I want?
  • What type of job am I looking for?

  • What industries or companies interest me?

  • What are my salary expectations?

  • What skills do I want to use or develop?

Having clear goals will help you focus on opportunities that align with your ambitions and values.

If you're Christian believer, don't forget to include God in your answer. After I answer all these questions, please pray about it and let's it align with what's God plan for you in life.

For other religion believer, you can do as your religion.

Step 2: Update Your Resume, Cover Letter, LinkedIn and Jobstreet Profile

Your resume is often your first impression, so make it count. Tailor it to highlight your skills, achievements, and experiences relevant to the jobs you’re targeting. Remember to:

  • Keep it concise (1-2 pages).

  • Use action words like “managed,” “developed,” or “launched.”

  • Quantify your achievements when possible (e.g., “Increased sales by 20%”).

Your LinkedIn profile should complement your resume. Use a professional photo, write a strong headline, and craft a summary that showcases your personality and expertise.

Resume Tips:

  • Use a clean and professional format.
  • Focus on accomplishments, not just responsibilities (e.g., “Increased sales by 20%” rather than “responsible for sales”).
  • Highlight relevant skills and experiences.
  • Keep it concise, ideally to one page (or two, if you have extensive experience).

Cover Letter Tips:

  • Personalize the cover letter for each job.
  • Address it to the hiring manager (if possible) and mention the specific role.
  • Showcase your enthusiasm for the role and company.
  • Explain how your skills and experience make you a perfect fit.

Step 3: Build a Job Search Routine

Consistency is key when job hunting. Dedicate specific hours each day or week to:

  • Searching for job openings.

  • Tailoring your applications.

  • Networking with professionals in your field.

Having a routine can help you stay organized and avoid burnout.

I've created Job Search Tracker, you can download it HERE. You can use this spreadsheet freely.

Step 4: Tap Into Your Network

Many jobs are filled through referrals, so don’t hesitate to reach out to your network. Let friends, family, former colleagues, and mentors know you’re looking. Attend networking events, join industry groups, and actively engage on LinkedIn to expand your connections.

You can start post about you're looking in WhatsApp Story, follow https://myfuturejobs.gov.my/ to see any opening or events around you.

Step 5: Start Applying Strategically

Instead of applying to every job you see, focus on quality over quantity. Read job descriptions carefully and tailor your application to each role. Highlight the specific skills and experiences that match the job requirements. This extra effort shows employers that you’re genuinely interested.

Tips for Job Searching:

  • Use Keywords: Search for jobs using specific keywords related to your skills and desired job title.
  • Set Alerts: Create job alerts on platforms like LinkedIn or Indeed to get notifications when a job that matches your criteria is posted.
  • Network: Reach out to your professional network to inquire about job openings or recommendations. Sometimes, the best opportunities come through referrals.

Step 6: Prepare for Interviews

Before you start receiving interviews invites, please be prepared. Research the company, review common interview questions, and practice your answers. Be ready to share specific examples of your accomplishments and explain how you can add value to the company.

Interview Preparation Tips:

  • Research the Company: Understand the company’s mission, values, products, and services. Be prepared to answer why you want to work there.
  • Practice Common Interview Questions: Familiarize yourself with common questions like “Tell me about yourself” and “Why should we hire you?”
  • Prepare Your Own Questions: Interviewers often ask if you have questions for them. Ask thoughtful questions about the company culture, growth opportunities, and team dynamics.
  • Dress Professionally: Even if the company has a casual dress code, it’s better to be slightly overdressed for the interview.

You can download the Interview Preparations HERE.

Step 7: Follow Up

After submitting applications or attending interviews, don’t forget to follow up. A simple thank-you email or a polite inquiry about the status of your application can leave a positive impression.

Follow-Up Email Tips:

  • Send the email within 24 hours of the interview.
  • Thank the interviewer for their time.
  • Briefly mention one or two key points from the interview that solidify your interest in the role.
  • Keep it concise and professional.

Below is an example that you can follow. You can always asked ChatGPT to write one for you and don't forget to customized it.

Step 9: Negotiate the Job Offer

If you’re offered the job, congratulations! But before you accept, take some time to evaluate the offer and, if necessary, negotiate your salary, benefits, or other conditions.

Tips for Negotiating:

  • Do Your Research: Research average salaries for your role and experience level in the industry and location.
  • Be Polite and Professional: Negotiations should be respectful and based on facts. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you deserve, but do so professionally.
  • Consider the Whole Package: Beyond salary, evaluate other aspects of the job offer like health benefits, work-life balance, career development opportunities, and flexibility.
