Parenting Tips: How to Send Your Child to Preschool for the First Time Ever

Sending your child to preschool for the first time can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. We sent our son to school first time back in July 2022.To be really honest, it's terrible experience but we have learned a lot from this experience.
As a parent, it marks a major milestone in your child’s growth, but it also brings questions and emotions. How will they adapt? Will they be safe and happy?
Here’s a guide to help you (and your child) navigate this new chapter smoothly.

1. Prepare Your Child Emotionally

Before the big day arrives, it's essential to help your child understand what preschool is and what to expect. Talk about school in a positive way, explaining that they will have fun, make new friends, and learn exciting things. You can even visit the preschool together beforehand to familiarize them with the environment and meet their teacher.

Tip: Read books about starting school together, and encourage your child to ask questions. This helps them feel more in control.

2. Establish a Routine

In the weeks leading up to preschool, start getting your child used to the schedule. Establish a routine for waking up, having breakfast, and getting ready. Having a consistent routine will ease the transition on the first day.

Tip: Involve your child in picking out their school clothes and packing their school bag. This gives them a sense of responsibility and excitement.

3. Communicate with the Preschool

Reach out to the preschool teachers and staff ahead of time to discuss any concerns or special needs your child may have. Understanding the preschool's daily schedule, nap times, and mealtime routines can also help you prepare your child for what's coming.

Tip: Ask the teacher if there will be a "transition" period where you can stay with your child during the first few days. This can help both of you adjust gradually.

4. Ease Separation Anxiety

For both parents and children, separation anxiety can be real. It’s normal for kids to feel nervous or teary when saying goodbye. Reassure your child that it’s okay to feel this way but that you’ll be back to pick them up soon.

Tip: Create a goodbye ritual—something quick and simple, like a hug, kiss, or special handshake. Be consistent so that your child knows what to expect every day.

5. Stay Positive

Children pick up on their parents’ emotions, so staying calm and positive is key. While it’s natural to feel anxious about leaving your little one, showing confidence will help your child feel more secure. Celebrate this new milestone as a step toward their independence.

Tip: If you’re feeling emotional, save those tears for after you’ve said goodbye. Give yourself a moment once you’re outside the classroom!

6. Allow for Adjustment Time

Every child adjusts to preschool at their own pace. Some may settle in quickly, while others take a bit more time. Be patient, and give your child space to share their feelings at the end of the day.

Tip: Ask open-ended questions about their day—“What was your favorite part?” or “Did you play with any new friends?”—to encourage conversation without pressuring them.

7. Celebrate Small Wins

Recognize and celebrate the little victories, whether it’s your child waving goodbye without tears or sharing stories about a fun activity they did at school. These moments will build their confidence and make the preschool experience something they look forward to.

Sending your child to preschool for the first time can feel like a big step for both of you, but with preparation, patience, and a positive mindset, it can be an exciting new beginning. Watching your child learn, grow, and thrive in a new environment is a rewarding experience for any parent!
