Our Family Staycation at Kundasang: A Refreshing Escape into Nature

Nestled in the cool highlands of Sabah, Kundasang has long been a favorite destination for those seeking a tranquil retreat surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. Our recent family staycation at Kundasang was an experience filled with fresh mountain air, scenic views, and unforgettable moments. Here’s a glimpse into our adventure and why Kundasang should be on your travel list.

A Scenic Drive to Kundasang

The journey to Kundasang began with a scenic drive from Kota Kinabalu. As we wound our way through lush greenery and climbed higher into the mountains, the temperature dropped, and we could feel the crisp cool air—a welcome change from the coastal heat. Along the way, we made a few stops to enjoy the stunning views and take some family photos against the backdrop of rolling hills and distant peaks.

Arrival at Our Accommodation

We chose to stay at a cozy cabin in Kiram's Village, which is known for its rustic charm and proximity to the majestic Mount Kinabalu. The cabin was surrounded by beautiful gardens and offered a spectacular view of the mountain. Stepping out onto the balcony in the morning and seeing Mount Kinabalu towering above us, shrouded in mist, was a sight to behold. The kids were thrilled with the open space to run around, and we enjoyed the peaceful ambiance of the highlands.

Exploring the Attractions

One of the highlights of our stay was visiting the Desa Dairy Farm, often referred to as the "Little New Zealand" of Sabah. The kids were excited to see the cows up close, feed the calves, and of course, sample the delicious fresh milk and yogurt produced on-site. The farm’s vast green pastures, with the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kinabalu, made for some postcard-worthy family photos.

We also took the opportunity to visit the Kundasang War Memorial, a site that commemorates the sacrifices of soldiers during World War II. The beautifully maintained gardens, which are divided into different themes like the Australian Garden, the English Garden, and the Borneo Garden, provided a serene setting for reflection and learning about the area’s history.

Indulging in Local Cuisine

No staycation is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Kundasang didn’t disappoint. We enjoyed hearty meals of local Sabahan dishes, with fresh vegetables and herbs grown in the surrounding highlands. One of the highlights was dining at a local restaurant that served sinalau bakas (smoked wild boar), a traditional Kadazan-Dusun dish that’s rich in flavor and unique to this region.

Relaxation and Family Bonding

While there were plenty of activities to keep us entertained, we also made sure to spend time simply relaxing and enjoying each other’s company. The cool climate of Kundasang was perfect for cozy evenings spent playing board games, telling stories, and sipping on hot drinks while watching the fog roll in over the mountains.

We also took a leisurely walk around the village, breathing in the fresh mountain air and enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. The slower pace of life in Kundasang allowed us to truly unwind and reconnect as a family, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

A Memorable Departure

As our staycation came to an end, we felt rejuvenated and grateful for the time we spent together in this beautiful corner of Sabah. The memories we made in Kundasang—from the stunning mountain views to the simple pleasures of being in nature—will stay with us for a long time.

Final Thoughts

Kundasang offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and family-friendly activities, making it an ideal destination for a staycation. Whether you’re looking to explore the great outdoors, learn about local history, or simply relax in a serene environment, Kundasang has something for everyone. Our family staycation here was truly a refreshing escape, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit.
